New article: "A System for Autonomous Seaweed Farm Inspection with an Underwater Robot"
Blue Mat's Fredrik Gröndahl is one of the authors of a new article on how underwater robots can be used in large-scale cultivation of macroalgae, and the challenges that need to be overcome.
The rapidly growing algae farming industry on the west coast of Sweden has the potential to contribute to feeding humanity in a profitable and sustainable way. One step towards this could be to use small unmanned underwater robots to inspect the cultivation facilities. Such a system would reduce both costs and risks, as the need to use boats and divers is reduced. But there are difficulties that need to be overcome. For example, GPS does not work underwater and the robots must use other methods to navigate. The open sea is a demanding and dangerous environment.
In an article in the scientific publication Sensors, researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, including Blue Mat Fredrik Gröndahl, review the challenges and opportunities of using unmanned underwater robots in algae cultivation.
