New report: Synergies and conflicts for Swedish primary seafood production
The seafood sector experiences negative interactions with a number of other activities, including protected areas, wind power, military interests and heavy industry, but also seals, cormorants and commercial shipping. The bright spots are interactions with tourism and - for land-based fish farming - industrial symbiosis in the form of waste heat and purification capacity.
The findings are based on a survey of primary seafood producers, additional interviews and data collection. The authors of the report, researchers at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, see it as very important to find solutions to conflicts between different activities, both within the same industry and with other industries, to promote sustainable growth in the seafood sector, where several industries such as coastal fishing now have a negative view of the industry's future.
