New article: Integrating biodiversity impacts into seafood life cycle assessments: pathways for improvement

January 9, 2026 | Research | News

The researchers identified 39 environmental impacts linked to seafood production, 90% of which cause biodiversity loss. In previous life cycle assessments, only one-fifth of these had been included, despite the fact that methodologies exist for half of the impacts. The most serious limitations in previous life cycle assessments were the lack of methodologies for the impacts of exploitation and changes in ocean use, as well as impacts on ecosystems and genetic biodiversity.

The study provides recommendations on how best to take into account the impact of seafood on biodiversity depending on the system being studied, the geographical area, and the data set.
