New report: Improving the welfare of cultured low-trophic aquaculture species in a changing climate

January 14, 2026 | Research | News

The cultivation of low-trophic species, mainly filter feeders, is sustainable but sensitive to climate change as these species cannot regulate temperature and salinity. A risk assessment for Västra Götaland identified 22 current and an equal number of future climate-related welfare risks, including extreme temperatures and changes in food availability.

Four measures are proposed: more research, increased monitoring and preparedness, the possibility of lowering cultivation bags, and better site selection for climate resilience.
