Swedish seafood consumption surveyed
You can now access the most reliable statistics on Swedish seafood consumption. Researchers at Rise have compiled official statistics and supplemented them with collected data. They have also processed their data to give as accurate a picture as possible.
For a long time there has been no comprehensive information on Swedish seafood consumption. The Swedish Board of Agriculture publishes statistics for food consumption, but no longer does so for seafood in particular, citing uncertain statistics.
The new report therefore provides insights where previously we had to rely on assumptions and estimates. For example, the report shows that:
- 74% of what we eat is imported
- we mostly eat farmed salmon, wild-caught cod, herring and shrimp.
- 10 species groups (out of 85) account for 75% of consumption
For Blue Food - which has ambitious goals for Swedish production and consumption of seafood - the report means that there is a clear starting point to compare with when the center's efforts are to be followed up. Two of the authors of the report are also active within Blue Food, Friederike Ziegler is a member of the steering group and Kristina Bergman is now employed as a doctoral student at KTH and is one of Blue Food's young researchers.
You can also find the report in the Digital Scientific Archive, Diva.
