
Blue Food doctoral course: "The seafood value chain: from production to consumption"
From March 16 to 20, 2026, Blå mat's doctoral course will be held at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Fiskebäckskil. Course participants will gain broad knowledge of the various aspects of the seafood sector from a variety of perspectives. Postdocs and professionals who wish to increase their knowledge are also welcome to participate. The course is taught in English and awards 3 higher education credits.
The course covers areas such as:
- Cultivation of extractive species such as algae and mussels
- Fish farming on land, at sea, and in lakes, as well as mixed farming
- Nutritional requirements and development of sustainable feed from alternative ingredients
- How feed for the most common fish species is produced
- The most common fishing methods, including Swedish fishing areas, quota setting, species, etc.
- How we can diversify the use of wild-caught and farmed species for food
- Key steps in the seafood production chain
- Areas of application and opportunities for adding value to side streams from different process steps
- Various aspects of seafood quality
- Consumer attitudes toward seafood
- Health effects of a diet containing seafood
- Sustainability analyses of new and existing seafood value chains
- Digitalization and AI in the seafood production system
- Key elements of the legal framework governing seafood production
- Examples of how seafood production can be a basis for tourism
The doctoral course, which awards 3 credits, is offered by Chalmers University of Technology's Department of Life Science, with teachers from Chalmers, the University of Gothenburg, Rise, KTH, IVL, and companies in the seafood industry. In addition to an intensive week at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, the course includes preparatory reading, project work, and follow-up studies.
